A JOURNEY OF WINES
What makes the Ribera de Duero wine so special?
The two Spanish wines so famous worldwide they might as well be part of the Spanish flag are the red wine Rioja and the red wine Ribera del Duero. Also the two most consumed nationally, and maintain an ongoing debate about which is best. For their fans, of course they will have a favourite, but for the majority of consumers the two are very similar and and even use the same variety of grapes, the Tempranillo.
For us, along our route we’ll get to meet the wines of Ribera del Duero. These are fundamentally red wines, although rosé wines also exist. The variety of grape is the most common red grape found in the country, knwon worldwide as ‘tempranillo’, which constitutes 90% of the wine’s production.
From the 3rd to the 5th March
Day 1 - Madrid - Aranda de Duero
We’ll leave early from Madrid, where we’ll begin our journey towards Aranda de Durro. Particularly known for its gastronomy, the wine of Ribera del Duero, and the roast lamb and blood sausage of Aranda. We’ll get to Aranda and check in, and get to know the city, in particular, the old town. After comes the best bit of the day, as we go to the first winery, which is interestingly 7km long and was built between the 12th and 13th centuries, under the ground of the old town of the city. To be experienced only while you try the wine originating from the region.
Afterwards you’ll have free time so get ready… because this night is something special. Meet the second famous winery and get your engines going dancing La Charanga. As you might expect, we’ll end up in a club… and who know, maybe until dawn!
Day 2 - Aranda de Duero - Peñafiel - Zamora
We’ll wake up, gain strength and make our way towards Peñafiel. Here is particularly famous for red wine. There are four wines which can be found in the hidden barrels: Tinto joven, Tinto Crianza, Tinto Reserva and Gran Reserva red wine. The second is currently gaining international recognition, and you’ll be able to try it during a tasting on the trip.
We’ll have free time to eat and wander the streets, and even head up the mejestic tower which protects the city from high up, and the views will leave you speechless. We’ll hop back on the bus towards Zamora, check in and prepare ourselves for one of the most magical and experiental nights of our lives… We’ll go to have dinner in an underground winery where we’ll try a typical menu from the area and, of course, the wine won’t be missing tonight. After the dinner we’ll get back to the bus and leave Zamora.
Day 3 - Zamora - Salamanca - Madrid
After a great night yesterday we’ll wake up, recharge our batteries at breakfast and check out at 12pm, because today we’ll be off to meet the excellent university city, Salamanca. We’ll take a guided tour around the historical centre of the city and, of course, have a sip of red wine in the ‘Plaza Mayor’; the heart of the city. Tourists, university students and even locals alike are attracted here as a place to meet up.
You’ll have free time and lastly return to Madrid. Here, we’ll say goodbye, but not before a toast to the great weekend we’ve spent together.
