Day 1- Tangier - Chefchaouen

After we have passed border control, we will start our trip from the green Mediterranean to the idyllic smurf village, the blue town of Chefchaouen, which was originally Jewish.

Did you know that…

  • Chefchaouen is the administrative centre of the province with the same name and one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the North of Morocco
  • It is known for the blue colour of it’s little houses
  • Every year, just before Ramadan, the inhabitants of Chefchaouen paint their houses blue and white, going through 15 tonnes of paint. Why? The legend states that this frightens off bugs and flies, although no one knows if it’s true!
  • For centuries it was considered a sacred city and until 1920, Muslims were prohibited from entering the city

Day 2 - Chefchaouen - Fez

After a tasty breakfast we will head up the Rif Mountains, famous for marijuana farming, heading towards Fez, the cultural capital of Morocco for being the home of the world’s most famous university.

We will visit Fez with an official guide and lose ourselves in the 8000 streets in the labyrinth Medina. We will pass through the Koranic school, leather dyeing factories and its markets full of different colors and aromas.

Did you know that…

  • Fez and Morocco generally are the primary importers in the world of green tea
  • Despite what you might think, polygamy in Morocco only represents 0.31% of Moroccan weddings
  • The university of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez is the oldest university in the world that is still going

Get out of bed! It’s time to go to the desert!

In the morning we will get on our way south towards Rissani, where yohistoriclyu’ll be left speechless admiring the Erg Chebbi Dunes, the tallest in Morocco. When the sun goes down, we will meet some charming dromedary friends and will start our journey to the Haimas camp (1h 30 mins approximately) where you can enjoy the game of shadows that is cast as the sun sets on the dunes. Here we will have a dinner and will enjoy the entertainment of our berber friends, or if you’re not in a party mood, feel free to enjoy a romantic night under the Saharan stars!

Day 4- Merzouga - Dades Valley - Todra Gorge - Ouarzazate

Today, we will get up early to see the Sun rise from behind the dunes. We’ll then head back to the hotel on our dromedaries and take advantage of a relaxing shower and comforting breakfast and leave in the direction of Marrakesh, passing views of a climber’s paradise: the Todra gorges. After some snaps, the bus will take us to the great gate of the desert: Ouarzazate.

Day 5- Ait ben Haddou - Marrakesh

In the morning we will wake up soon to enjoy another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Morocco: Aït Ben Haddou. Here, we will visit the famous Kasbah, i.e., a fortified village made of mud and straw. From here we will climb the oldest and winding roads which provide access to the Atlas mountains, the highest mountains in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, the views are incredible and you will probably be able to see snow!

Heading down the Atlas we will arrive at the tourist capital of Morocco, the red city of Marrakesh. We will have time to visit its buzzing souk, the market, the Bahia palace and enjoy the sunset in the mythical Jamaa el Fna square. If you’re still not tired… get ready for a night of madness in Marrakesh!

marruecos.marrakesh.mercado

Did you know that…

  • The origin of the Jamaa el Fna market in unknown. Some believe its name could be an old neologism meaning the ‘meeting of the dead’
  • The city is divided between two large areas: the oldest being the Medina and the new is called Gueliz
  • The name Marrakesh comes from the Berber language meaning ‘land of God’. The city is located in the intersection between the desert and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas mountains

Day 6- Marrakesh - Casablanca

We will wake up (potentially fighting a hangover) and will try to enjoy the return journey, as after visiting Marrakesh we will head back north, towards the most populated atlantic city in Morocco: Casablanca. It’s the most important commercial and military port in Morocco, and home to over 7 million Moroccans.

This city was very important in the Second World War, because it was part of the French territory that the Americans attacked as part of ‘Operation Torch’.  Furthermore it was the scene of the eponymous movie with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

marruecos.rabat.mar

marruecos.rabat.mezquita

Did you know that…

  • Rabat is the capital of Morocco on a political, albeit not cultural level
  • In 1942, the world of cinema brought the great gems of Morocco to a historically international level, for example the film Casablanca was inspired by the Moroccan city
  • At every entrance to the Tangier Mosque you will find a letter advising that non muslim entry is prohibited. However, tourist entry is allowed as long as you sufficiently cover up

Day 7- Casablanca - Tangier

After stopping to see a panoramic view of Casablanca, we will head north to return to Tangier and the Pillars of Hercules.  Back through customs and we can enjoy another chilled trip by boat, where we will return to European soil sailing through the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 8- Spain

Like all good things, this journey also has to end. With sadness but with memories that will stay with us for life, we leave our group of friends at the departure point.
